Battle of the primers

Hi guys! We have officially made it to the middle of the week, thank goodness! I don’t know about y’all, but I am more than ready for this weekend to get here! For today’s post, I thought I would review 2 primers I have recently used. I finished an entire bottle of the Smashbox primer and I’ve been using the Bare Minerals primer for about a week, so I think I can give y’all a pretty good verdict! My skin is sensitive, oily, and prone to breaking out if something makes it the least bit upset. Talk about high maintenance! So that is where I’m coming from in my review of these two products. Let’s get started!

primersboth

Let’s start with the Smashbox Photo Finish Blemish Control primer since I’ve finished that bad boy up completely! The full size, which is 1 ounce, retails for $40. You can find more information about it here: http://www.sephora.com/photo-finish-more-than-primer-blemish-control-P379830?skuId=1523422

Overall, I liked this primer. I do feel like it helped my makeup stay in place all day and it didn’t break me out. That being said, I don’t think it did an amazing job at controlling any oil and shine. However, I know that isn’t a main claim of this product. I would have to blot my face after a couple hours of wear when shine would start to break through oily areas like my T-zone though, which I didn’t love. Also, I didn’t feel like it helped my makeup “glide on” like a lot of primers do. It absorbed quickly, which was nice, but my skin basically felt the same after putting it on. All in all, I enjoyed it just fine but I wanted to try something different once I was finished with it. So, moving on…

bminclose

BareMinerals Oil Control Foundation Primer. This bad boy is almost half the price of the Smashbox primer, ringing in at $24 for the full size, which is also 1 ounce. You can read more about it here: http://www.sephora.com/product/productDetail.jsp?keyword=bare%20minerals%20primer%20oil%20control&skuId=1431089&productId=P312112&_requestid=304746

My verdict so far? I love it! It helps my makeup stay put and keeps me matte better than anything else I have tried. Also, I feel like it helps my foundation go on smoother. But mostly, I am love-ing the shine control.

So who is the winner? BareMinerals! I’ll be honest with y’all – I was surprised. I dont’ know why, but I thought BareMinerals just wouldn’t hold up next to Smashbox, but for what I need in a primer, BareMinerals is nailing it on the head!

I hope you guys enjoyed and if you have any questions about these products at all, let me know! I’ll talk to y’all Friday! 🙂

Candles and Comfort Food

Hey guys! Happy Monday! I hope y’all had a great weekend. On Saturday, Greg and I met a friend downtown at the Greek Festival and ate entirely too much. I’m talking each of us had a gyro, fries, and baklava sundae. Probably not the healthiest lunch ever but it was sooo delicious. It was also so nice outside, so it felt good to be out walking around. After the Greek Festival, I had Greg swing me by Hobby Lobby so I could pick up some supplies for a bridesmaid gift I am doing myself. I can’t wait to share pictures once I’m finished! Some of the bridesmaids gifts were bought online, but I think it adds a special touch to hand make a little something yourself. Afterwards, we headed to Greg’s parents’ house to eat with their big group of friends and watch the game. The Gamecocks brought home another win! Woo hoo!

On Sunday, Greg and I went to church then ran some errands. Bath&Body Works was having their 2 for $22 candle sale, so of course I had to pop in and pick some up. I absolutely love their candles, but I’ll only buy them when they are on sale like that. Here is a picture of my mini candle haul:

candlehaul

I got 2 Marshmallow Fireside candles, 2 Tailgate candles, and 2 Pumpkin Sugared Doughnut wallflower refills. Marshmallow Fireside is one of my all-time favorite scents for fall/winter. It sounds like it would be a super sweet scent, but it isn’t. It seriously smells like you are sitting next to a campfire. It’s slightly cologne-y with a touch of sweetness that I adore.

By the way, how pretty is the new candle packaging? So chic!

I also picked up 2 Tailgate candles, which I think is a new scent. In the store it smelled fairly light, but I liked that. It also has a slightly cologne-y smell, but no sweetness. It seriously smells like you’re sitting outside during the fall when it’s slightly chilly, just watching football. I really like it!

Once I got home, I did some cleaning then it was time for dinner! I haven’t been feeling great, so I wanted something easy and comforting. To me, comforting=pasta 🙂 So I pulled together these ingredients for an easy yet super delicious dinner:

Seriously, all you do is brown the sausage in a pan by itself while you bring water to a boil in a separate pot for the pasta. Once the pasta in cooked, you dump in the sausage, a bag of baby spinach, pasta sauce of your choice, and I also put in some garlic and diced onions. Then I let it all cook together in the pot for a while before dishing it out and sprinkling the top with Parmesan cheese. So easy but it definitely hit the spot!

I hope y’all have a great start to the week and I’ll check in with you Wednesday!!

High Five For Friday!

Hi guys! Happy Friday! We made it through another work week – woo hoo! I hope you guys had a great week. Whether you have big plans for this weekend or no plans at all, I hope y’all have a fun couple of days coming up. For this Friday, I thought I would list 5 “little moments” this week that made me smile. Because in life, especially during a fairly routing work week, isn’t it all about those little things?

1) Thursday morning was gray, foggy, and a bit cool here in Columbia. I had to run a work related errand before heading into the studio, and I had time to pick up a Pumpkin Spice Latte from Starbucks before heading back. It was such a perfect day to enjoy this delicious fall drink, I wasn’t rushed on my drive back, and it was just a nice, peaceful few minutes in the car, latte in hand 🙂

2) I had to pop into Ulta to pick up some more primer, and I noticed they have nail polishes on sale near the check-out counter. Do they always snag you guys with those displays too? I scanned through the bunch, and I managed to find an OPI polish on sale for $2.50! And it was actually a color I wanted! Those babies are normally $10, so I was pretty happy with that.

3) My mom is all set to send out our wedding invitations today! While I have been excited for our wedding ever since we got engaged in January, this just makes it seem so much more real! I can’t wait to have all of our loved ones come together in November!

4) I had a work-related victory yesterday. I won’t go into detail, but it was one of those stories where someone told me “yeah, good luck putting that together” and I did it! It really goes to show that with hard work and persistence, you can do anything you put your mind to.

5) I stopped in Target last night to pick up some mascara, and of course I had to quickly browse through the clothes. I can’t seem to go in there without “glancing through” 🙂 At the moment, they have their v-neck t-shirts on sale for $6! I found a cute green one with navy birds on it, and it spoke to me. I’m usually all about the classic solid shades, but this one was fun and perfect for a relaxed weekend. Can’t wait to pair it with some jeans tomorrow!

I hope y’all had some great “little moments” this week! Please share them with me so I know I’m not the only one who finds joy in such small things 🙂 Have a wonderful weekend!

The easiest and most delicious soup ever

Hi guys! I hope y’all are having a great week so far. Things around here have been chugging along…work…the gym here and there…boring stuff like that 🙂 But I made the most delicious soup for dinner Monday night and I just have to tell you guys about it.

It’s super simple and only involves two ingredients. Yes…only two! Both ingredients are from Trader Joe’s, so my apologies if you don’t have one close by. The two ingredients are:

1) 1 bag Trader Joe’s Peruvian Style Chimichurri Rice with Vegetables

2) 2 boxes of Trader Joe’s Organic Tomato & Roasted Red Pepper Soup

soups

All I do is cook the rice in a big pot according to the instructions on the bag. Then, I pour the soup on top and mix it all in, letting it all cook together for a few minutes. It’s that simple!

It all looks kind of orange in the picture, but I promise you it’s delicious. The soup tastes like lasagna and the rice gives it a spice and texture. You could also use only one box of soup if you don’t need much and don’t want it have quite as much liquid. Either way, this is a super quick and easy dinner Greg and I love during the week.

I hope you guys enjoyed this post and I’ll check in with you on Friday! Bye!

It’s going to be a great week!

Well hello there, friends! Happy Monday to you! Alright, let’s be real…no one is really excited about Mondays. However, I was thinking about how when I start the day, week, whatever, on a positive note, it really just helps so much. So to start off this post, I thought I would share a couple quotes that always help me get in the positive frame of mind during the work week.

Now that we’re all happy and positive, let’s recap that weekend! Did y’all do anything fun? To get things started off right, Greg and I went to dinner on Friday night with some of our “couple friends”. I’ll just refer them as J and C. J and C got married back in April and we always have a great time with them. I can’t think off a better way to unwind from the work week than some good Mexican food and margaritas! Yum!

On Saturday I had both my hair and makeup run-throughs for the wedding! Having appointments and all that makes everything seem so real! The wedding is officially less than 2 months away, which makes me so excited but also slightly scared. I’m 100% positive I’m marrying the perfect guy for me, but this is seriously the biggest event I have ever been a part of. I just want everything to go well and for everyone to have a great time. I’m glad I scheduled hair and makeup trials beforehand so at least I can work out the kinks with my wonderful hair and makeup artists! I don’t want to give too much away, but this is the picture I showed my hair stylist to model my hair after:

That little beauty is known as the “messy french twist”. I told my hair stylist I loved the look and shape, but I want a “cleaner” version without the hairs hanging down and a bit more smoothed out. What do y’all think? My dress is fairly ornate up top and I will be wearing drop earrings, so I wanted my hair out of the way.

After I got all glammed up, I grabbed a late lunch with my mom and dad, who were sweet enough to come to Columbia to take part in my appointments. I sure do have an amazingly sweet family. After lunch, I headed to Greg’s parents’ house to watch the USC v. Georgia game. Whew! What a nail biter that was! It was a super close game but our Gamecocks came out victorious! Woo hoo!

Sunday was a lazy/productive day. Do y’all ever have those days? I wasn’t feeling too hot, so I let myself lounge a bit before running some errands and doing laundry. The star of the day was certainly our dinner. I made these absolutely delicious stuffed pasta shells:

widefood

tightfood

These are…get ready for it…baked shells with beef, sun-dried tomatoes, and spinach. Just let that sink in. And…they are just as good as they sound. This is where y’all can find the original recipe: http://www.cookincanuck.com/2011/09/baked-pasta-shells-with-beef-sundried-tomatoes-spinach-recipe/

I’ll be honest though, I probably wouldn’t make these shells during the work week if you are like me and come home absolutely starving, wanting something quick for dinner. While the recipe wasn’t terribly difficult to make, it was a bit time consuming. Just something to keep in mind! It was the perfect Sunday night dinner and they are certainly Greg approved!

I hope y’all enjoyed this post and have a fantastic start to your week! See you Wednesday!

High Five For Friday!

Happy, happy Friday, guys! If y’all are familiar with High Five For Friday posts, you basically talk about your favorite 5 things from the past week. But…I’ll be honest with y’all…this week was tough. Which is why I’m looking forward to a great weekend! So to stay on a positive note, I’m going to put down the 5 things I’m most looking forward to doing this weekend! I hope you guys enjoy and tell me what you’re looking forward to!

1) Three words. Pumpkin. Spice. Lattes. It’s still pretty hot here in South Carolina, so I’ve been enjoying this treat in its iced version. Still so darn delicious.

coffee

2) Having my makeup and hair trials for my wedding!! I’m going for a bronze eye with a more neutral pink lip, so I’m excited to see what a makeup artist can do. I’m so used to doing my own makeup it will be really special to have someone else do it for me. Pictures to come!

3) Spending more time with the other man in my life, Simba. How cute is he? I melt a bit when he lays like this, which Greg and I have dubbed “the torpedo” 🙂  (By the way, sorry if his eyes look funky. I used the red-eye correct and it makes him look slightly possessed.)

4) Hopefully getting a nice fall manicure using something like Essie’s “Wicked”

5) Making something super delicious that takes more than 30 seconds, like this yummy recipe:

I hope you guys have an amazing weekend! Talk to you Monday!

Long-wearing makeup allstars

Well, hello there! Happy middle of the week! Or in the words of one of my favorite commercials, happy hump day! I hope you guys have been having a great week so far. I’ve just been working my little tail off, which got me thinking about this blog post.

As I told y’all, I work in tv here in Columbia, South Carolina…aka one of the stinkin’ hottest, most humid places ever. When I put my makeup on in the morning, I need for it to seriously last. all. day. I never know if I’m going to have to film myself at 11 a.m. or 5 p.m., and I need to look halfway decent either way. So I thought I would share with you guys the two makeup gems I have discovered since entering the world of full-face, long-wearing makeup. While my primers and powders are also a key component to my makeup routine, those get switched up fairly often. These two products I’m about to share are the two that I seriously can not live without on a day where I’m working. I’ve tried to find cheaper alternatives, but none seem to stack up and I think they are worth their slightly high price tag.

Estee Lauder Double Wear foundation & Mac Pro Longwear concealer

Estee Lauder Double Wear foundation & Mac Pro Longwear concealer

Let’s start with the foundation, shall we? I had heard rave reviews about Estee Lauder’s Double Wear foundation and decided to give it a try once I realized my “real world” foundation just was not holding up under the studio lights. This stuff is serious. It’s medium to full coverage and once it’s on, it’s on. I use my Real Techniques foundation brush to apply it in sections to my face. If you would like a more in-depth explanation of this foundation, how it wears, or how I apply it, just let me know! Just for reference’s sake, the shade “Fresco” is the closest match to my skin tone.

This foundation retails for around $37. If you would like to read more about it, here is their website: http://www.esteelauder.com/product/643/22830/Product-Catalog/Makeup/Face/Foundations/Double-Wear/Stay-in-Place-Makeup

Then on to concealer! Mac’s Pro Longwear concealer is by far the best coverage and longest wearing concealer I have ever tried. I wear this stuff underneath my eyes, as well as on my face to cover any dark spots or blemishes. You only need the tiniest bit – a little goes a very long way. I typically use my clean fingers to tap this onto my face and my Beauty Blender to pat it in underneath my eyes. Again, if you have any questions about this stuff, I’d be more than happy to share my thoughts! I currently wear the shade NW20.

tightbottomconc

This concealer retails for around $20. Here is the site with more information: http://www.maccosmetics.com/product/shaded/157/10181/Products/Face/Concealer/Pro-Longwear-Concealer/index.tmpl?SKU_ID=SKU21994&gclid=Cj0KEQjwyrqgBRDepamt-LWA2oABEiQAV7nwwOUavGyhuRlxAId5QZjtMl9pT3vs3TSWDoLyuUWt2ToaAg768P8HAQ

Now while I gave y’all links to the companies’ official sites, I purchase both my foundation and concealer at the Estee Lauder or Mac counter in Belks. I find that to be the most convenient so they can match me correctly!

I hope you guys enjoyed this post and I’ll catch up with you again Friday!! 🙂

Well, hello there!

Good morning, guys! Since this is a new blog, I thought I would make my first post on the first day of a new week! Since y’all have no idea who I am, why don’t I introduce myself? 🙂

My name is Stephanie and I am a 27 year old television reporter at the Fox station here in Columbia, South Carolina. I’m a little different because after getting my law degree at the University of South Carolina, I decided to go into television. I majored in broadcast journalism at USC before law school, and my heart told me to go back to that. It’s a little unconventional, but I have been blessed with so many adventures during my time at Fox!

meonboat

However, more important than any job I will ever have is my family and loved ones. I have been so blessed in that department and I am currently engaged to my best friend and love of my life, Greg!

meandgreg

We are getting married this November and I can’t wait to become his wife! The Lord really knew what He was doing bringing this man into my life. He is the kindest, most considerate and genuine person you could ever meet. I’m looking forward to sharing some wedding moments with y’all!

I think that is enough for the moment. I plan on posting every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. I can’t wait to share a little piece of my world with y’all and have you guys hopefully share your world with me! Talk to y’all later!!
